How to Celebrate Earth Day Online

How to Celebrate Earth Day Online

Since we are stuck inside (or at least in own neighborhood), how can we celebrate Earth Day? But first...

What's Earth Day anyway.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, it now includes events coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network in more than 193 countries. (#wiki). Yup, today marks 50th anniversary of the birth of the Earth Day. And on that day, around the world, people, companies, governments are doing their part to raise an awareness on the importance of Earth protections. The theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate action.

Connect.

Connect with the nature. Get outside and explore. Those days #pandemiclife is a bit more difficult, but have a walk on the neighbourhood (#selfdistance yo!), smell fresh cut grass, listen to birds, hug a tree, dip your toes in the cold river. Simple pleasures of being surrounded by amazing nature.

Clean up.

Either if it's your backyard, street, garden, neighbourhood or a trail which you take during your walks - make a little clean up. Grab a reusable bag or a basket, gloves (try to reuse those or use winter gloves and wash them after, no need to throw them out), collect some litter and dispose properly later. If you are in Alberta, you can take part in Plastic Free YYC contest where you can win gift card to our store when you clean up and post about it. Click here for details.

Educate yourself.

Stuck at home? Watch some environmental movie! If you are not sure what could you watch, head to our youtube channel where i saved my youtube finds on environment, renewables, zero waste. Believe me, those videos are not old fashion 'save the planet' documentaries, but cool stories from around the globe. Click here to check it out.

Plant a tree.

They say the best time to plan a tree was 20 years ago and the next best time to do it is NOW. We collaborate with One Tree Planted and donate 5% of our sales to plant trees with that organization. On Earth Day, they just announced a plan to plant 1 milion trees in Australia, where bush fires happened recently. Click here to plant a tree.

Make a swap.

Today is a perfect day to start your Zero Waste journey or to simply try to reduce your waste. Today is a great day to make your first plastic-free swap. If you are new to that, start simple! Replace your plastic toothbrush with a bamboo one that can be composted, start using reusables such as water bottle, tote shopping bags and skip the single use plastics. For some inspiration where to start, you can head to our store (click here) or read a blog post about plastic-free july swaps here.

Go online.

Earth Day 2020 is celebrated online this year due to #pandemiclife. The official Earth Day website is full of ideas on how to celebrate Earth Day solo or online. It provides ideas of challenges you can take on today like preparing plant-based meal or signing climate related petitions. The other cool thing is a map that shows you all digital events happening like climate related classes or talks that you can join for free. Check it out!

Happy Earth Day gang.
